a history of the electrification scheme introduced on certain london brighton and south coast railway suburban lines in 1909. it was popular with passengers, but after the grouping of 1923 the newly formed southern railway decided to replace the overhead wiring with the third-rail system. the last of the sr overhead electric trains ran in 1929

although some of the route had been opened earlier, through traffic between its termini, the old established london bridge and the newer victoria, commenced on 1st may 1867. its course through densley populated inner suburbs encouraged the build-up of heavy short distance passenger traffic
